Celestin Messaggio, 1952 | Impressionist Palette Knife painter

Italian-born French painter Celestin Messaggio was born in Lombardy-Italy, his parents left Italy for Normandy when he was still only a child. From 1955, the land of the "men from the north" will inspire Messaggio’s artistic beginnings. His attachment to Normandy is still present in his paintings today: "If today I also wish to reproduce the warm light of the south, the waters of Venice remain a mirror reflecting my visit of the water gardens in Giverny".

Messaggio first became known as the "ambassador of pastel". He abandoned this delicate art in 1997 to devote all his time to oils. Needing to express the "gesture of the material" fully, oil enabled him to model the material, make it smooth or give it an impasto effect. Like the matador, Messaggio spreads the colour actively on the canvas with a palette knife, a brush or even his fingers. Anything which makes colour live, is good.

An orchestra director of colour, Messaggio takes us through the tranquil Italian landscapes to the bustling city of New York in an interpretation worthy of a maestro. The artist, whose first name is Célestin, from the Latin cealestis meaning which comes from heaven a name destined for the messenger-painter whose views of outdoor life which we are fortunate enough to contemplate.

Celestin Messaggio è nato in Lombardia, Italia, ma dal 1955 si trasferisce con i suoi genitori in Normandia, dove vive anche attualmente.

Ben presto divenne il trampolino del suo successo artistico. "Se il mio desiderio attuale mi spinge a descrivere il caldo sole che illumina il sud, le acque di Venezia sono per me uno specchio che riflette i giardini di Giverny".

Nel 1989, il critico John Delaunay ha scritto di lui: "Celestino è il vero messaggio dell'ambasciatore di pastello in Francia".

Tuttavia, nel 1997, sente il bisogno di andare avanti e iniziare a esprimersi diversamente: l'artista abbandona gradualmente il pastello a favore dell'olio.

Celestin è Cavaliere Ufficiale Accademico delle Arti e delle Lettere Greco-Marino in Italia. Messaggio ha ricevuto molti premi prestigiosi e medaglie durante la sua ricca carriera. Diverse città e musei hanno acquistato le sue opere.

Messaggio è presente in collezioni private in Germania, Inghilterra, Belgio, Italia, Giappone, Paesi Bassi, Svizzera, Stati Uniti e naturalmente, in Francia.
