El Greco | Life and Artworks

El Greco, byname of Doménikos Theotokópoulos (born 1541, Candia [Iráklion], Crete-died April 7, 1614, Toledo, Spain), master of Spanish painting, whose highly individual dramatic and expressionistic style met with the puzzlement of his contemporaries but gained newfound appreciation in the 20th century. He also worked as a sculptor and as an architect.
El Greco never forgot that he was of Greek descent and usually signed his paintings in Greek letters with his full name, Doménikos Theotokópoulos. He is, nevertheless, generally known as El Greco ("the Greek"), a name he acquired when he lived in Italy, where the custom of identifying a man by designating country or city of origin was a common practice.
he curious form of the article (El), however, may be the Venetian dialect or more likely from the Spanish.

John Constable RA | Romantic painter

John Constable (1776-1837) is famous for his landscapes, which are mostly of the Suffolk countryside, where he was born and lived.
He made many open-air sketches, using these as a basis for his large exhibition paintings, which were worked up in the studio.
His pictures are extremely popular today, but they were not particularly well received in England during his lifetime.
He did, however, have considerable success in Paris.
Constable was born in East Bergholt, Suffolk.
He was largely self-taught, and developed slowly.
In 1799 he was a probationer, and in 1800 a student at the Royal Academy schools.
