Édouard Manet (1832-1883) | Legacy

Legacy

Manet's public career lasted from 1861, the year of his first participation in the Salon, until his death in 1883. His known extant works, as catalogued in 1975 by Denis Rouart and Daniel Wildenstein, comprise 430 oil paintings, 89 pastels, and more than 400 works on paper.
Although harshly condemned by critics who decried its lack of conventional finish, Manet's work had admirers from the beginning.
One was Émile Zola, who wrote in 1867: "We are not accustomed to seeing such simple and direct translations of reality. Then, as I said, there is such a surprisingly elegant awkwardness ... it is a truly charming experience to contemplate this luminous and serious painting which interprets nature with a gentle brutality".

It has a long history, ranging from the beginnings of human habitation in Japan, sometime in the 10th millennium BC, to the present-day country.
Japan has been subject to sudden invasions of new ideas followed by long periods of minimal contact with the outside world.
Over time the Japanese developed the ability to absorb, imitate, and finally assimilate those elements of foreign culture that complemented their aesthetic preferences.

Vorrei dirti le più profonde parole d’amore,
ma non oso, per timore che tu rida.
Ecco perché mi burlo di me stesso e del mio segreto.
Derido il mio dolore per paura che tu faccia lo stesso.

Rogier Van Der Weyden | The Descent from the Cross, c. 1435

The Descent from the Cross was commissioned by the Greater Guild of Crossbowmen of Leuven in today's Belgium and was originally installed in the Chapel of Our Lady Without the Walls. The tiny crossbows in the side spandrels of the picture reflect the original patronage. De Vos and Campbell both give an approximate date of 1435 for the painting.
De Vos argues that the earliest known copy of Van der Weyden's Deposition, the Edeleheere triptych in Leuwen, may have been completed by 1435, certainly before 1443. This implies that Van der Weyden's painting pre-dates it. The painting was exchanged around 1548 for a copy by Michael Coxcie and an organ.

Henri Matisse | The Models

For Henri Matisse (1869-1954)🎨, his models were more than muses; they were partners in his work and guides on the ever-shifting paths to artistic expression.
He would often work with one model for an extensive period of time, beginning in 1916 with Italian model Laurette, sometimes spelled Lorette, who posed for nearly 50 paintings in the year after they met.
Matisse's longest continuous relationship was with Lydia Delectorskaya, a Russian woman who later become his secretary, studio manager and nurse to his sick wife.

Marius Markowsk, 1976 | Digital painter

Marius Markowski was born in Switzerland and makes digital paintings which look like they have been made with oil or acrylic paint.
"My artistic effort in digital painting was founded its origin in the oil painting, where I was passionately focusing my energy for several years. One day I had the idea to prepare an image on the computer in order to have more liberty in the development process. I experimented with these new tools and so discovered my enthusiasm for digital painting".
