Édouard Cortès | Post-Impressionist painter

Édouard Leon Cortès (1882-1969), of french and spanish ancestry, was born in Lagny-sur-Marne, a few miles east of Paris.

As an adolescent, he became fascinated with the arts and at seventeen began his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

The year 1901 marked the artist's first exhibition at the Salon des Artistes Francais.

His piece depicting a dramatic Paris street scene at dusk brought him immediate recognition and fame.

Jordanian site of Petra

Petra fu rivelata al mondo moderno nel 1812 da Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, un viaggiatore svizzero che, in abiti arabi, si faceva chiamare Cheikh Ibrahim e seguiva la strada che collegava Damasco all'Egitto passando per la Giordania. Egli aveva sentito dire che nei pressi del villaggio di Wadi Musa si trovavano, in una sorta di fortezza naturale, delle vestigia straordinarie. La regione apparteneva allora all'Impero ottomano e gli stranieri curiosi di antichità - che erano ritenute "opera degli Infedeli" - erano considerati con grande diffidenza, anche per le tensioni politiche e religiose dell'epoca.

Burckhardt si presentò allora come un pellegrino che desiderava sacrificare una capra al profeta Aronne, la cui tomba, costruita nel XIII secolo, si riteneva collocata al di là delle rovine, in cima al gebel Haroun.
Accompagnato dalla sua guida, l'esploratore attraversò la città antica senza potersi fermare un attimo a prendere una nota o a fare uno schizzo, e tuttavia consapevole dell'importanza di quelle vestigia, e che le rovine presso Wadi Musa fossero quelle di Petra. Entusiasta, diffuse la notizia tra gli occidentali residenti in Medio Oriente e in Egitto, e la ripeté nel suo libro Travels in Syria and the Holy Land, che fu pubblicato solo cinque anni dopo la sua morte, nel 1823.
