Pierre-Albert Marquet (1875-1947)

French painter and draughtsman Pierre-Albert Marquet (1875-1947) studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he met Henri Matisse in 1890.
Matisse became a life-long friend; both artists were accepted in Gustav Moreau's painting class in 1897.
In 1900 they worked together on the decoration of the Grand Palais at the Paris World Exhibition.

Alex Colville | Magic Realist painter

David Alexander Colville, painter (born 24 Aug 1920 in Toronto, Ontario died 16 July 2013 in Wolfville, Nova Scotia). Alex Colville moved with his family to Amherst, NS, in 1929 and studied at Mount Allison (1938-42).
On graduating he joined the army and in 1944 was sent to Europe as a war artist. He returned to Canada late in 1945 and worked in Ottawa on paintings based on his European sketches and watercolours until his demobilization in 1946.

Henry Woods RA (22 April 1846 - 27 October 1921) was an British painter and illustrator, and one of the leading Neo-Venetian school artists.

Early life

Henry Woods was born to a middle-class family at Warrington.
His father, William, was a pawnbroker and for some time a town councillor; his mother, Fanny, a shopkeeper. He was the eldest of nine siblings.
