Romanian Art History and Sitemap

Romanian art consists of the visual and plastic arts (including Romanian architecture, woodwork, textiles and ceramics) originating from the geographical area of Romania.
The production of art in Romania is as old as the Paleolithic, an example being a cave painting from the Cuciulat Cave (Sălaj County).
During the Neolithic, multiple cultures lived on the modern territory of Romania.
Their material culture included pottery and abstract clay statuettes decorated with geometric patterns.
These may give hints on the way these civilizations used to dress and maybe tattoo.

Nicolae Vermont | Genre painter

Nicolae Vermont 1866-1932 was one of the masters of Romanian Realist painting and one of the most interesting painters, muralists and draftsmen of his time, as many viewed him as an associate of Stefan Luchian.
He was a prolific and surprisingly innovative artist, with a strong, original style and manner and quite a broad choice of subjects, but he preferred landscapes and still lifes.
Vermont was one of the most interesting and influential voices of his generation, marking and changing the landscape of Romanian painting, as he always tried to offer something more, something new, to challenge rules and themes, to offer the viewer an artistic experience that was strikingly beautiful and shockingly fresh and alive. A great master and a great name.

Zoltan Molnos | The Transylvanian Dalí

It is now more than 80 years since the Surrealism, in a smoky Parisian café, was officially born, After long decades of peak and slow agony, when the world was still celebrating its most famous master, Salvador Dali, far from the French and Spanish lands, in a small Transylvanian town, inhabited by hard-working people of Hungarian minority, the surrealism had its second birth on the canvas of a that time unknown young Romanian painter, Zoltán Molnos.
It might seem curious that the surrealism, the most spectacular limb of the avant-garde movement, which had its philosophy in protesting against the inhumanity of the “civilised” world, had its renaissance in a city from Romania.
