He often painted dal vero, that is, en plein air.

He was also known for his ability to paint animals in rural scenes.

He founded the Lombard Association of Watercolor painters in 1911.

Luigi Nono | Genre painter

Luigi Nono (1850-1918) was an Venetian painter.

A young Nono entered the Accademia of Venice, then under the leadership of Pompeo Marino Molmenti. But by at the age of twenty years, he went to Polcenigo in the Friulian countryside, and he began to refine his style of landscape paintings, including Sull' Avemaria, Le sorgenti del Gorgazzo, Ritorno dai campi and Verso sera.

He later returned to painting genre subjects of everyday life, and these paintings would prove to be his most influential.

John Henry Henshall | Victorian watercolour painter

John Henry Henshall, usually known as Henry Henshall RWS (1856-1928) was a British watercolourist and etcher.

A favourite theme of Henshall's work is the contrast between the happy innocence of childhood, without cares, and the tribulations of old age.

He was not afraid to tackle uncomfortable subjects and his honest, realistic pictures of ordinary life were quite unusual for painters in the Victorian era.

Joaquín Sorolla nacque a Valencia in Spagna il 27 febbraio 1863.

Rimasto orfano di entrambi i genitori a soli due anni d'età fu allevato nella famiglia di una zia materna insieme alla sorella Eugenia.

Manifestò presto la sua attitudine al disegno.

José Mongrell i Torrent | Genre painter

José Mongrell i Torrent (1870-1937) was a Spanish painter, born in Valencia and died in Seville.

He studied at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts with Ignacio Pinazo (1849-1916).

During this formative period, he already showed his skills as a portraitist and entered the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid for the first time, where he would continue participating throughout his career.

Hugo Salmson | Genre painter

Born in Stockholm, Hugo Fredrik Salmson (1843-1894) was a Swedish painter, known for figures and genre scenes.

He was the son of Fredrik Ludvig Salmson, a wholesaler, and his wife Maria Perlberg.

He initially studied business, but soon decided on an artistic career.

In 1862, he began his studies at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts where he was trained by Johan Christoffer Boklund.

Antonio Mancini | Carminella, 1870

Nato a Roma da una famiglia di umili origini proveniente da Narni, Antonio Mancini (Roma, 1852-1930) cresce nel paese umbro e vi trascorre la sua infanzia ricevendo la sua prima formazione presso gli scolopi della chiesa di S. Agostino.

Probabilmente per assecondare il suo precoce talento e avviarlo a buoni studi artistici, la famiglia si trasferisce da Narni a Napoli nel 1865.

Qui frequenta la scuola dell'oratorio dei gerolomini e la scuola serale presso la chiesa di S. Domenico Maggiore, dove incontra il coetaneo Vincenzo Gemito con cui, nello stesso anno, inizia a frequentare lo studio dello scultore Stanislao Lista.

William Bouguereau | La magliaia, 1873

Subito dopo che Adolphe William Bouguereau (1825-1905) completò Tricoteuse, nel 1874, Goupil trasferì il dipinto nella loro galleria all'Aia e lo vendette alla famiglia Poortman.

Il Tricoteuse è rimasto nei Paesi Bassi da allora e con la stessa famiglia per quasi un secolo.

Senza dubbio con l'aiuto del suo potente commerciante, Goupil, Bouguereau era stato acquisito da molti collezionisti nei Paesi Bassi in quel momento.

Il Tricoteuse avrebbe sicuramente contribuito alla reputazione di Bouguereau ai massimi livelli della società olandese.

L'immagine di una contadina in costume italiano, è uno dei primi esempi sul tema della maglieria, a cui ritorna per tutta la sua carriera.

Anton Romako was an Austrian painter.

Romako painted a large number of landscape scenes (for example from the Bad Gastein), influenced by the Barbizon school, but is known mostly for his portraits and historical scenes.

His early works display the influence of Biedermeier realism, while the late works are painted in a nervous expressionist style which disturbed his contemporaries.

Robert Völcker | Romantic painter

Robert Völcker Robert Volcker (1854-1924) was a German visual artist who was born in Dohna, near Pirna, in Saxony.

He learned under Ferdinand Pauwels (Belgian history painter, 1830-1904) at the Dresden Academy.

He then moved to Munich, where he died in 1924.

Alice Mary Havers was the third daughter and youngest of four children born 19 May 1850 to Thomas Havers (1810-1870) of Thelton Hall, Thelveton, Norfolk, the family seat, and his first wife Ellen Ruding (1817-1854).

His father, at one time a Roman Catholic priest, was Professor of Spanish Literature at King's College, London.

Calderon studied at James M. Leigh's school in London in 1850, then in Paris at the studio of François-Edouard Picot.

He lived near by in Montmartre, sharing a room with fellow art student Henry Stacy Marks.

He is the grandson and last male descendant of Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840).

Eugène Laermans | Genre painter

Eugène Jules Joseph Baron Laermans (1864-1940) was a Belgian painter.

He was born in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek. At the age of eleven, he contracted meningitis, which left him deaf and nearly mute (although some sources say he was born deaf).

This concentrated his attention on his sense of sight, and led to his decision to become a painter.

He enrolled at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in 1887, where he studied with Jean-François Portaels and was a great admirer of the paintings of Félicien Rops.
