Anny Maddock, 1954 | Figurative painter


South African painter Anny Maddock started drawing people when she was old enough to hold a pencil and was considered a child prodigy. She matriculated at Rhenish Girls High in Stellenbosch and then studied fine art at Cape Technical College. After qualifying she studied Fashion Design and then went into Textile Design.
After her marriage and divorce she worked in fields as diverse as journalism, tourism, antiques and restauranteering.

"Bedlam", "scandal", and “hilarity” were among the epithets used to describe what is now considered Georges Seurat’s greatest work, and one of the most remarkable paintings of the nineteenth century, when it was first exhibited in Paris.
Seurat labored extensively over A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, 1884, reworking the original as well as completing numerous preliminary drawings and oil sketches (the Art Institute has one such sketch and two drawings).

Bernard Ndichu Njuguna (Kenyan painter, 1979)


Bernard Ndichu Njuguna was born and grew up in the central highlands of Kenya surrounded by scenic landscapes and greenery. Moving narratives from his mother and observing his father prepare art lesson schemes for the school where he taught, were his earliest exposures to art.
These childhood scenes have shaped and provided inspiration for his paintings.

Jacob Lawrence | Dynamic cubism

Jacob Armstead Lawrence (1917-2000) was an American painter known for his portrayal of African-American historical subjects and contemporary life.
Lawrence referred to his style as "dynamic cubism", an art form popularized in Europe which drew great inspiration from West African and Meso-American art. For his compositions, Lawrence found inspiration in everyday life in Harlem.
He brought the African-American experience to life using blacks and browns juxtaposed with vivid colors.

After university I travelled extensively to Europe, South America and Asia. Henry Ossawa Tanner | Realist / Symbolist painter



Henry Ossawa Tanner, (born June 21, 1859, Pittsburgh, Pa., U.S.-died May 25, 1937, Paris, France), American painter who gained international acclaim for his depiction of landscapes and biblical themes.
After a childhood spent largely in Philadelphia, Tanner began an art career in earnest in 1876, painting harbour scenes, landscapes, and animals from the Philadelphia Zoo. In 1880 Tanner began two years of formal study under Thomas Eakins at Philadelphia’s prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), where he was the only African American.

South African painter Jean Abrie was born in the former Eastern Transvaal and in his early years grew up in Zimbabwe.
There he developed a great love for wildlife.
Upon returning to South African he completed his secondary schooling and graduated at the University of Pretoria.
Jean prefers to work in oils and capture the many facets and mystical qualities of African wilderness in a photo realistic style on large canvasses.
