The Tree of Life or The Peace window - La Paix ou L’Arbre de vie - at the chapel of Cordeliers of Sarrebourg, a small town in the Vosges Mountains in France, is a stained-glass window about 15 feet (4,6 meters) wide and 12 feet (3,7 meters) high, contains several symbols of peace and love, such as the young child in the center, being kissed by an angelic face which emerges from a mass of flowers.
The Peace Window / Tree of Life is the largest stained-glass window made by Marc Chagall.
On the left, below and above, motherhood and the people who are struggling for peace are depicted.
Musical symbols in the panel evoke thoughts of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, which was a favourite of Mr. Hammarskjöld's.

This huge stained glass is presented as a big multicolored bouquet, around and inside which gravitate several scenes of peace in the Old and New Testaments.
From left to right we see: the Entry of Jesus in Jerusalem, the Crucifixion, the Good Samaritan and the Sermon of the Beatitudes.
On the right, the character, who reads and meditates on the biblical message of peace, is overcome by Isaiah’s vision, and crowned by three major elements of the Jewish faith: the Torah (tables of the Law), the Menorah (the seven-branch lampstand) and the animal of sacrifice.
The Tree of Life is the manifestation of this union of the two testaments.

Chagall's own handwritten dedication (15 May 1963) reads:
"A tous ceux qui ont servi les buts et principes de la Charte des Nations Unies et pour lesquels Dag Hammarskjöld a donné sa vie".
"To all who served the Purposes and Principles of the United Nations Charter, for which Dag Hammarskjöld gave his life".
This memorial in stained-glass is a tribute to the late Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld (1905-1961), and the 15 UN staff members and UN peacekeepers who died with him.
Their plane crashed while flying to a peace negotiation for the Congo Crisis in Northern Rhodesia.
A UN Staff committee was formed to ask world-renowned Belorussian-born French Jewish artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985), whose work Hammarskjöld had greatly admired, to create the memorial.
Chagall designed the memorial with a unique collaboration with master glass makers Brigitte Simon and Charles Marq which resulted in this iconic artwork.
In this biblically referenced artwork, the tree of paradise divides the panel with the left-side showing humans and animals blissfully floating and on the right side are humans gathered to a cross.
The bottom has slithering snakes and the top has tablets of law.
The artwork was unveiled at a ceremony with the artist, the Secretary-General U Thant, and United Nations staff all in attendance.
At the ceremony the artist said:
“With all my soul I wanted to convey that extent of my inspiration and the inspiration of Dag Hammarskjold and all those who died for peace, for that was the very purpose for which the UN was founded”.
L'Albero della vita o La Pace, nella cappella dei Cordeliers di Sarrebourg, in Francia, è una vetrata di circa 15 piedi (4,6 metri) di larghezza e 12 piedi (3,7 metri) di altezza, che contiene diversi simboli di pace ed amore, come il bambino al centro, che viene baciato da un volto angelico che emerge dalla massa dei fiori.
La Vetrata della Pace / l'Albero della Vita è la più grande vetrata realizzata da Marc Chagall.
Sulla sinistra, in basso ed in alto, sono raffigurate la maternità e le persone che lottano per la pace.
I simboli musicali nel pannello evocano pensieri sulla Nona sinfonia di Beethoven, che era una delle preferite del signor Hammarskjöld.
Questa enorme vetrata è presentata come un grande bouquet multicolore, attorno ed all'interno del quale gravitano diverse scene di pace dell'Antico e del Nuovo Testamento.
Da sinistra a destra vediamo l'Ingresso di Gesù a Gerusalemme, la Crocifissione, il Buon Samaritano ed il Sermone delle Beatitudini.
Sulla destra, il personaggio, che legge e medita sul messaggio biblico di pace, è sopraffatto dalla visione di Isaia incoronato da tre elementi principali della fede ebraica: la Torah (tavole della Legge), la Menorah (il candelabro a sette bracci) e l'animale del sacrificio.
L'Albero della Vita è la manifestazione della unione dei due testamenti.

La dedica manoscritta dello stesso Chagall (15 maggio 1963) recita:
"A tous ceux qui ont servi les buts et principes de la Charte des Nations Unies et pour lesquels Dag Hammarskjöld a donné sa vie".
"A tutti coloro che hanno servito gli scopi e i principi della Carta delle Nazioni Unite, per la quale Dag Hammarskjöld ha dato la vita".
Questo memoriale in vetro colorato è un omaggio al defunto Segretario generale Dag Hammarskjöld (1905-1961) ed ai 15 membri dello staff delle Nazioni Unite e ai peacekeeper delle Nazioni Unite che morirono con lui.
Il loro aereo si schiantò mentre volava verso una trattativa di pace per la crisi del Congo nella Rhodesia settentrionale.
Fu formato un comitato dello staff delle Nazioni Unite per chiedere all'artista ebreo francese di origine bielorussa di fama mondiale Marc Chagall (1887-1985), le cui opere Hammarskjöld aveva molto ammirato, di creare il memoriale.
Chagall progettò il memoriale con una collaborazione unica con i maestri vetrai Brigitte Simon e Charles Marq, che diedero vita a questa iconica opera d'arte.
In questa opera d'arte con riferimenti biblici, l'albero del paradiso divide il pannello con il lato sinistro che mostra umani e animali che fluttuano beatamente e sul lato destro ci sono umani raccolti attorno ad una croce.
In basso ci sono serpenti striscianti ed in alto ci sono le tavole della legge.
L'opera d'arte è stata svelata durante una cerimonia alla quale hanno partecipato l'artista, il Segretario generale U Thant e lo staff delle Nazioni Unite.
Alla cerimonia l'artista affermò:
"Con tutta la mia anima ho voluto trasmettere quella portata della mia ispirazione e l'ispirazione di Dag Hammarskjold e di tutti coloro che sono morti per la pace, perché questo era lo scopo per cui è stata fondata l'ONU".
