Johan Oscar Cantzler | Genre painter

Johan Oscar Cantzler (1844-1921) was a Swedish painter who mainly drew portraits and genre paintings.

He also made drawings for the Swedish banknotes in denominations of SEK 5, 50 and 100.

Cantzler first worked for a time as a commercial bookkeeper, the same profession as his father.

He then decided to devote himself seriously to painting.

He started his education as a student of Gillis Hafström and Edvard Perséus and then finished it in Paris.

Returning to Sweden, he participated in the early 1890s at the founding of the New Artists' Guild.

As a painter, he usually limited himself to portraits and genre paintings.

He made a large number of paintings in oil which often ended up in mansions and in other private collections.

Johan Oscar Cantzler (Stoccolma, 1844-1921), è stato un pittore Svedese che disegnava principalmente ritratti e quadri di genere.

Ha realizzato anche disegni per le banconote svedesi nei tagli da 5, 50 e 100 corone svedesi.

Cantzler ha lavorato per un certo periodo come contabile commerciale, la stessa professione di suo padre.

Decide poi di dedicarsi seriamente alla pittura.

Ha iniziato la sua formazione come allievo di Gillis Hafström ed Edvard Perséus e poi l'ha terminata a Parigi.

Ritornato in Svezia, all'inizio degli anni Novanta dell'Ottocento partecipò alla fondazione della New Artists' Guild.

Come pittore, di solito si limitava a ritratti e quadri di genere.

Realizzò un gran numero di dipinti ad olio che spesso finirono in palazzi signorili ed in altre collezioni private.
