Harald Otto Julius Friedrich (1858-1933) was a German painter, university professor and the grandson and last direct male descendant of Caspar David Friedrich.
Harald Otto Julius Friedrich was born on April 14, 1858 in Dresden as the only son of Adolf Friedrich (1824-1889) and Caroline Lehmann (1828-1914).
He is the grandson and last male descendant of Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840).
His parents encouraged their son's artistic talent and took him on numerous trips through Europe.
He received his training as a painter while studying at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 1876 to 1880.
His teachers in portrait and history painting were Ferdinand Pauwels and Leon Pohle.
While he was still a student, he painted a famous portrait of his father in 1879.
As a student, he sold pictures to private individuals and to the Saxon Art Association.
Friedrich took part in academic exhibitions with his work from 1877 to 1894.
After studying in Munich and Venice, he worked in the master studio of Anton von Werner in Berlin in the early 1880s.
In 1886, the painter was given a teaching position at the Technical University of Hanover and from 1895 a full professorship for freehand drawing, figure drawing and life drawing for mechanical engineers and electrical engineers at the Technical University of Hanover.
From 1895 onwards, his student Carl Wiederhold studied in Friedrich's studio.
Friedrich married Elisabeth Paula Wally Hedwig Veronelli (1876-1957) in 1897.
Their only daughter was the violinist Annaliese Karoline Gertrud Emmy Friedrich (1898-1977).

Harald Otto Julius Friedrich nacque il 14 aprile 1858 a Dresda come unico figlio di Adolf Friedrich (1824-1889) e Caroline Lehmann (1828-1914).
È il nipote ed ultimo discendente maschio di Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840).
I suoi genitori incoraggiarono il talento artistico del figlio e lo portarono in numerosi viaggi attraverso l'Europa.
Ha ricevuto la sua formazione come pittore mentre studiava all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Dresda dal 1876 al 1880.
I suoi insegnanti di ritratto e pittura storica furono Ferdinand Pauwels e Leon Pohle.
Mentre era ancora studente, dipinse un famoso ritratto di suo padre nel 1879.
Da studente vendeva quadri a privati ed all'Associazione d'arte sassone.
Friedrich partecipò con le sue opere a mostre accademiche dal 1877-1894.
Dopo aver studiato a Monaco e Venezia, all'inizio degli anni Ottanta dell'Ottocento lavorò nello studio del maestro Anton von Werner a Berlino.
Nel 1886 il pittore ottenne un incarico di insegnante presso l'Università Tecnica di Hannover e dal 1895 una cattedra ordinaria di disegno a mano libera, disegno di figure e disegno dal vero per ingegneri meccanici ed elettricisti presso l'Università Tecnica di Hannover.
Dal 1895 il suo allievo Carl Wiederhold studiò nello studio di Friedrich.
Friedrich sposò Elisabeth Paula Wally Hedwig Veronelli (1876-1957) nel 1897.
La loro unica figlia era la violinista Annaliese Karoline Gertrud Emmy Friedrich (1898-1977).
