Carl Emil Mücke | Genre painter

Carl Emil Mücke (1847-1923,) was a German genre and animal painter of the Düsseldorf school.

He painted mostly domestic interior scenes with women, girls and lively cats and kittens.

Carl Mücke is the son of the painter Heinrich Mücke.

Since 1844 his father has been professor of anatomy at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf.

He studied at this academy from 1863 to 1870.

However, he took private lessons from Wilhelm Sohn.

He lived in the Netherlands for a period and, hence, many of his paintings are of Dutch girls and reflect Dutch interiors.

Between the 1870s and around 1890 he often stayed in the Netherlands, from 1877 to 1888 in Volendam, North Holland, where he found the characteristic motifs of his painting: genre scenes of Dutch people in situations of the daily family life, often of women and children dressed in folk costumes, in the company of dogs and cats, in old Dutch interiors or by the sea.
