Robert Neffson, 1949 | Photorealist painter

Robert Neffson is an American painter known for his photorealistic street scenes of various cities around the world, museum interiors and for early still lifes and figure paintings.

Neffson was a member of the First Street Gallery in New York from 1978 to 1985, during which time he had numerous solo exhibitions, as well as group shows with such fellow artists as Catherine Murphy.

While represented from 1985 to 1998 by Gallery Henoch in New York City, he was inspired by Richard Estes and Chuck Close and was among a group of second-generation Photorealist painters that were exhibiting in SoHo galleries such as O. K. Harris Works of Art and Louis Meisel Gallery.

In 2004, Neffson was commissioned to create a painting of the near-completed new 7 World Trade Center building, which was presented to developer Larry Silverstein of Silverstein Properties in a ceremony presided over by New York State Governor George Pataki and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

In 2007, Neffson authored the catalog to the British painter Clive Head's exhibition at Marlborough Fine Arts, London.

The text consists of an introduction and letters between the two artists centered on their discussion of the creative process.

Robert Neffson joined Hammer Galleries in 1998, the New York institution.

He has also exhibited at London's Plus One Gallery since 2005.

In 2009 he was invited to join the Bernarducci Meisel Gallery in New York City.

The director of the gallery, Louis K. Meisel, originated the phrase Photorealism in 1968, which was first used in a Whitney Museum catalog in 1970.

Neffson also began exhibiting with the Albemarle Gallery in London during the same year.

Robert Neffson è un pittore Americano noto per le sue scene di strada fotorealistiche di varie città del mondo, interni di musei e per le nature morte ed i dipinti di figure.

Neffson è nato a New York City ed è cresciuto a Little Neck, New York.

È stato cresciuto da un padre single, dopo che sua madre, un'artista, è morta quando aveva sette anni.

Iniziò a frequentare i corsi della Art Students League di New York nel 1961, sotto la guida di artisti come Lennart Anderson ed Edwin Dickinson.

Da studente ha copiato antichi maestri al Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York ed al Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Il suo studio, tra gli altri, dei pittori Jan Vermeer, Thomas Eakins, Camille Corot e Canaletto, sviluppò ulteriormente le sue capacità.

Mentre frequentava il Boston University College of Fine Arts, dove si laureò cum laude nel 1971, il lavoro di Neffson attirò l'attenzione dei suoi professori, tra cui James Weeks ed il pittore espressionista astratto Philip Guston.

Ha studiato anche alla Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture nel Maine ed al Tanglewood Institute di Lenox, Massachusetts, entrambi con borsa di studio completa.

Dopo aver conseguito il master in Belle Arti per la Pittura nel 1973, sempre presso l'Università di Boston, Neffson ha insegnato brevemente al DeCordova Museum di Lincoln, Massachusetts, ed al Fisher College di Boston.

Ha ricevuto sovvenzioni dalla Massachusetts Arts and Humanities Foundation e dall'Elizabeth T. Greenshields Memorial Foundation a sostegno del suo lavoro.

Nel 1976, la vita e il lavoro di Neffson cambiarono significativamente quando gli fu assegnata la borsa di studio Fulbright-Hayes per la pittura a Roma.

Durante il suo soggiorno in Italia, conobbe William Bailey all'American Academy di Roma, che esercitò una forte influenza sulle sue nature morte dell'epoca.

Al suo ritorno nel 1977, Neffson ricevette una borsa di studio Artist-in-Residence della durata di un anno dal Roswell Museum and Art Center nel New Mexico, seguita da incarichi di insegnamento presso l'Arizona State University di Tempe e la Pennsylvania State University.
