Demelsa Haughton | The magic forest

Demelsa Haughton is a painter of whimsical and magical imagery.

From the bright setting of a tiny ladybird village (complete with corner shop) to the gloomy darkness of a forest filled with gnarly trees that were once children... her work creates a sense of wonder and gives a snapshot of imaginary worlds and characters, often with an injection of quirky, subtle humour.

With a lifelong love of traditional stories, and anything magical or supernatural, she is influenced by stories far removed from real life and endeavours to capture this in her paintings.

An early memory that perhaps influenced this was being convinced she had seen a two headed llama at a zoo visit.

Embarrassingly, she continued to believe this until well into her teens.

It was a sad, sad day when reality became real.

She loves to create a sense of possibility in her work, and hopes that the viewer can imagine themselves walking through a forest one day, where they might be lucky enough to stumble upon a cat enjoying a nice cup of tea, meeting a giraffe that will take them on a ride through the clouds over some springy macaron trees, or seeing a two headed llama...

Spending much of her 20's painting with traditional methods, she was introduced to the basics of Abobe whilst acheiving a 1st class BA (honours) in Fashion Design and Production.

She now paints all of her art in Photoshop on a Cintiq (a Cintiq is a graphics tablet and you use a digital pen to draw directly on the screen).

She starts with a pencil sketch and then scans this to continue working on digitally.

As all her work is digital there is no 'original' as such, but the freedom to be more experimental with composition and colours without the fear of ruining a painting is a great bonus, as is the ability to easily create prints and cards of her work without the need for additional scanning or photography.

As well as producing prints and cards, Demelsa also illustrates children's books, most recently a retelling of six Hans Christian Andersen fairytales for a French publisher, and she is currently working on several jigsaw designs for Ravensburger.

Demelsa lives in North Yorkshire (UK) with her partner and their 3 children.

Con un amore permanente per le storie tradizionali e per qualsiasi cosa magica o soprannaturale, è influenzata da storie lontane dalla vita reale e si sforza di catturarle nei suoi dipinti.

Uno dei primi ricordi che forse ha influenzato questo era la convinzione di aver visto un lama a due teste durante una visita allo zoo.

In modo imbarazzante, ha continuato a crederci fino all'adolescenza.

È stato un giorno triste, triste in cui la realtà è diventata reale.

Ama creare un senso di possibilità nel suo lavoro e spera che lo spettatore possa immaginare se stesso un giorno mentre cammina attraverso una foresta, dove potrebbe avere la fortuna di imbattersi in un gatto che si gode una bella tazza di tè, incontrando una giraffa che lo porterà a fare un giro tra le nuvole sopra alcuni alberi di macaron primaverili od a vedere un lama a due teste...

Trascorrendo gran parte dei suoi 20 anni dipingendo con metodi tradizionali, è stata introdotta alle basi di Abobe mentre conseguiva una laurea di prima classe (con lode) in Design e produzione di moda.

Ora dipinge tutte le sue opere in Photoshop su una Cintiq (una Cintiq è una tavoletta grafica ed usi una penna digitale per disegnare direttamente sullo schermo).

Inizia con uno schizzo a matita e poi lo scansiona per continuare a lavorarci digitalmente.

Poiché tutto il suo lavoro è digitale, non esiste un "originale" in quanto tale, ma la libertà di essere più sperimentali con composizione e colori senza il timore di rovinare un dipinto è un grande vantaggio, così come la capacità di creare facilmente stampe e cartoline dei suoi lavori. lavorare senza la necessità di ulteriori scansioni o fotografie.

Oltre a produrre stampe e cartoline, Demelsa illustra anche libri per bambini, più recentemente una rivisitazione di sei fiabe di Hans Christian Andersen per un editore francese, ed attualmente sta lavorando a diversi progetti di puzzle per Ravensburger.

Demelsa vive nel North Yorkshire (Regno Unito) con il suo compagno ed i loro 3 figli.
