Ferdinand Fagerlin | Genre painter

Ferdinand Julius Fagerlin (1825-1907) was a Swedish-German genre painter. Born in Stockholm, Fagerlin first apprenticed as a shipbuilder (1842-1843) before attending the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts (1845-1847).
He joined the army (1850-1854) and practiced painting, particularly portraits.



From 1854 on he dedicated himself completely to painting and with the support of his former teachers studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, with Karl Ferdinand Sohn und Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow (1854-1855).
He spent time in Paris (1856-1858), where he worked in the shop of Thomas Couture.
On his return to Düsseldorf in 1958, he settled as a painter and married Alice (1844-1931), daughter of painter Henry Ritter (1816-1853) whose shop he inherited after the latter's death in 1853.


From 1862 to 1902 he was a member of the Düsseldorf art society, Malkasten.
The Swedish painter Axel Kulle was his student from 1875 to 1880.
After 1863, he traveled frequently to the Netherlands, and the imagery he acquired there, particularly of the Dutch coast and the life of its sailors and inhabitants became formative in his genre painting.
In 1867 he showed Der Heiratsantrag and Die Eifersucht at the International Exposition in Paris.

Ferdinand Julius Fagerlin (1825-1907) è stato un pittore di genere Svedese-Tedesco appartenente alla Scuola di Düsseldorf.
Nato a Stoccolma, Fagerlin lavorò inizialmente come apprendista costruttore navale (1842-1843) prima di frequentare l'Accademia reale svedese delle arti (1845-1847).


Si arruolò nell'esercito (1850-1854) e praticò la pittura, in particolare i ritratti.
Dal 1854 si dedicò completamente alla pittura e con il sostegno dei suoi ex insegnanti studiò alla Kunstakademie di Düsseldorf, con Karl Ferdinand Sohn e Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow (1854-1855).
Trascorse del tempo a Parigi (1856-1858), dove lavorò nel negozio di Thomas Couture.
Al suo ritorno a Düsseldorf nel 1958, si stabilì come pittore e sposò Alice (1844-1931), figlia del pittore Henry Ritter (1816-1853) di cui ereditò il negozio dopo la morte di quest'ultimo nel 1853.


Dal 1862 al 1902 fu membro della società artistica di Düsseldorf, Malkasten.
Il pittore Svedese Axel Kulle fu suo allievo dal 1875 al 1880.
Dopo il 1863 viaggiò spesso nei Paesi Bassi e le immagini che acquisì lì, in particolare della costa olandese e della vita dei suoi marinai ed abitanti, divennero formative nella sua pittura di genere.
Nel 1867 espose Der Heiratsantrag e Die Eifersucht all'Esposizione Internazionale di Parigi.
Morì a Düsseldorf sei settimane dopo il suo 82esimo compleanno.
