Scott Conary, 1971

Raised where the East Coast suburbs filtered into the woods and farms, Scott Conary (Rhode Island School of Design, BFA ’93) creates oil paintings of everyday objects and places with which we have complicated and often ambiguous relationships.

Pulled from their context, these objects say something about how we interact with the world and one another.

These are stories of the arbitrary nature of beauty, of melancholy, of fleeting triumph, and the camouflage of time: the mess and splendor of the broken egg, the weed that fights to survive in the gaps of our attention, the weathered door used for generations but now forgotten, and so on.

Fueling and inspiring this work is his young daughter’s battle with complicated heart defects, her experiences with disability, and the impact this has had on those around her.

This has directed his focus toward the narratives and tensions in the everyday, and is why he wanders deeper into the thicket of representational work.

As an extension of his love of paint and the simple narrative, Conary gives lectures and runs workshops around the country and online.

He and his family live in Portland, Oregon.

Estratti dal loro contesto, questi oggetti dicono qualcosa su come interagiamo con il mondo e gli uni con gli altri.

Queste sono storie sulla natura arbitraria della bellezza, della malinconia, del fugace trionfo e del camuffamento del tempo: il disordine e lo splendore dell'uovo rotto, l'erbaccia che lotta per sopravvivere negli spazi vuoti della nostra attenzione, la porta segnata dalle intemperie usata per generazioni ma ormai dimenticate, e così via.

Ad alimentare ed ispirare questo lavoro è la battaglia della sua giovane figlia contro complicati difetti cardiaci, le sue esperienze con la disabilità e l’impatto che ciò ha avuto su coloro che la circondano.

Ciò ha indirizzato la sua attenzione verso le narrazioni e le tensioni del quotidiano, ed è il motivo per cui vaga più in profondità nel folto del lavoro rappresentativo.

Come estensione del suo amore per la pittura e la narrativa semplice, Conary tiene conferenze e seminari in tutto il paese ed online.
