Kenny Harris, 1974 | Naturalist painter

Kenny has been a fixture in the Los Angeles art scene since arriving in Venice Beach in 2001.

He has made a career out of describing his environment both at home and abroad.

He has traveled around the world depicting subject matter both grand and mundane.

Drawn to quiet subjects, his muted palette and spare spaces evoke a calming energy.

Travel is a constant pull for this artist, and he has made bodies of work focused on Central America, South America, Italy, France, Cuba, Turkey, China, as well as the US and his backyard of Venice Beach.

He borrows from both modernism and classicism to achieve a naturalistic style full of grace balanced with formalism and urgency.

Classical motifs are cropped with a modern eye; rendered forms are contrasted with palette knife scrapes and impasto.

During college, a semester abroad in Florence was a formative time for him, studying Renaissance Art History and classical figure drawing at the atelier of Charles Cecil.

He copied drawings at the Gabinetto in the Uffizi and drew in the churches.

Later he developed his tonal palette while studying under Frank Mason at The Art Students’ League of New York.

More recently he earned his MFA at Laguna College of Art + Design focusing on portraiture.

Kenny is an Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing at Laguna College of Art + Design and was awarded the prestigious Elizabeth Greenshields Grant in 2016.

He currently shows at Koplin Del Rio Gallery in Seattle, George Billis Gallery in New York, and Galerie Mokum in Amsterdam.

Kenny Harris è stato un appuntamento fisso nella scena artistica di Los Angeles da quando è arrivato a Venice Beach nel 2001.

Ha fatto carriera descrivendo il suo ambiente sia in patria che all'estero.

Ha viaggiato in tutto il mondo descrivendo argomenti sia grandiosi che banali.

Attratto da soggetti tranquilli, la sua tavolozza tenue e gli spazi liberi evocano un'energia calmante.

Il viaggio è una spinta costante per questo artista e ha realizzato opere incentrate sull'America Centrale, Sud America, Italia, Francia, Cuba, Turchia, Cina, nonché sugli Stati Uniti e sul suo cortile di Venice Beach.

Prende in prestito sia dal modernismo che dal classicismo per ottenere uno stile naturalistico pieno di grazia bilanciato con formalismo ed urgenza.

I motivi classici sono ritagliati con un occhio moderno; le forme sono in contrasto con i graffi della spatola e l'impasto.

Durante il college, un semestre all'estero a Firenze fu per lui un periodo formativo, studiando storia dell'arte Rinascimentale e disegno di figure classiche presso l'atelier di Charles Cecil.

Copiò disegni al Gabinetto degli Uffizi e disegnò nelle chiese.

Successivamente ha sviluppato la sua tavolozza tonale mentre studiava con Frank Mason alla Art Students' League di New York.

Più recentemente ha conseguito il MFA presso il Laguna College of Art + Design concentrandosi sulla ritrattistica.

Kenny è professore assistente di pittura e disegno al Laguna College of Art + Design e nel 2016 ha ricevuto il prestigioso Elizabeth Greenshields Grant.

Attualmente espone alla Koplin Del Rio Gallery di Seattle, alla George Billis Gallery di New York ed alla Galerie Mokum di Amsterdam.
