Viggo Christian Frederik Vilhelm Pedersen (1854, Copenhagen - 1926, Roskilde) was a Danish painter who primarily made his mark as a landscape painter.
Education
Viggo Pedersen learned to draw from his father Thomas Vilhelm Pedersen and was then admitted to CV Nielsen's Drawing School and attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from September 1871 to spring 1878.
Har traveled abroad in Germany (1873), in Paris (1881) and traveled from there to Switzerland (where Joakim Skovgaard met him) and Italy, which he visited several times since, along with trips to Holland and Germany.
Biography
At the same time as he was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts, he painted under PC Skovgaard, later under Janus la Cour, and the landscape pictures he exhibited from 1875 showed a strong influence of these artists.
Several of his first works were bought by the Art Association, and in 1877 he received the Sødringske Opmuntringspremiye for Uden for et Bryggers.
In the spring of 1881 he traveled to Paris and there received very strong impressions of modern French landscape art; they showed themselves most clearly in the wide and vividly painted and highly effective Upkört Vej under old trees, which was acquired by the National Gallery in 1882, just like laterSunshine in the Living Room (1888) and the large, atmospheric Ved Nattens Frembrud (1890), which had been honored with the annual medal at the exhibition.
Several times he was in Paris and Italy with support from the Academy; Of no small importance to him was his stay in Sora in Campania, where he lived with Joakim Skovgaard.
In recent years, Pedersen has executed quite a few large and small open-air pictures in which figures play a prominent role, such as the large Isak sees Rebekah coming and Duet, as well as interiors with figures, such as the Annunciation of Mary; in all he has painted not a few biblical pictures, distinguished by earnest and serious feeling, a peculiar grandeur of composition, and rich coloristic effect.
He was a member of the Academy's plenary assembly (1904) and of the Academy Council 1908-11.
Family
Viggo Pedersen was the son of the draftsman, First Lieutenant Thomas Vilhelm Pedersen and Adolphine Marie Pedersen and older brother of Thorolf Pedersen.
On 21 March 1884, he married Elisabeth Bella Marie Borup (1860-1905), daughter of parish priest Julius Theodor Borup and Marie Rosa Caroline Trier.
After Elisabeth's death, he married again Johanne Louise Aagaard (1881-1970), daughter of stockbroker Thor Christian Aagaard and Marie Magdalene Zeuthen.
