Coderch & Malavia | Figurative sculptors

Coderch and Malavia is a sculpture project in which the human body is at the core of the plastic discourse.

A universe of meaningful forms centred on the idealised human figure. And a clear horizon: Beauty as an everyday tool.

Joan Coderch and Javier Malavia came together in 2015 to carry out sculptural work featuring a refined technique, which is present from the modelling in the studio to the final piece cast in bronze.

Joan Coderch was born in 1959 in Castellar del Vallés, Barcelona, and he graduated from Barcelona’s Faculty of Fine Art in 1984.

Javier Malavia was born in 1970 in Oñati, Guipúzcoa, and he graduated from Valencia’s San Carlos Faculty of Fine Art in 1993.

Once they met, they discovered their artistic similarities, which led to their undertaking this new project that follows in the footsteps of masters of figuration such as Maillol, Rodin, Marini and Bourdelle.

Part of the originality of their art lies in the way they work, since they make their sculptures four-handed, thereby sharing in the creation of the pieces.

Joan and Javier also have in common the values of their artistic creation, such as social commitment with regards to equality, the environment and childhood.

Their project stands out due to its honesty and authenticity: they explore different human attitudes to life, in which mimicking nature, the search for emotion through the work, the revealing of the feelings that direct man, the encounter between the figure and posture, and the combining of beauty and discipline feature prominently.

The human being is at the core of their art.

From the very beginning, Coderch and Malavia have managed to position themselves as outstanding figurative artists.

They received the Reina Sofía Painting and Sculpture Prize for their “Hamlet” artwork in 2017 and won First Prize at the 14th ARC International Salon Competition with the sculpture “The Swan Dance” in 2019.

Their other awards include the Mariano Benlliure Sculpture Medal, the TIAC Art Prize or the Arcadia Contemporary Award.

In addition to being nationally and internationally renowned, their work forms part of private collections in several countries of Europe, Asia and America.

They display their work in collective and individual exhibitions in both private entities and public spaces.

Many venues in France, the United States (Miami), Mexico, Italy or Greece have had the opportunity of enjoying their works where they regularly exhibit.

They were present in Berlin’s Urban Nation Biennial with their “Learning to Fly” piece in September 2019.

In 2018, they held an individual exhibition in Amsterdam’s Galerie Mokum.

In Spain, they have exhibited in the most important cities, such as A Coruña, Barcelona, Granada, Ibiza, Madrid, Valencia or Malaga.

Coderch e Malavia è un progetto scultoreo in cui il corpo umano è al centro del discorso plastico.

Un universo di forme significative centrate sulla figura umana idealizzata. E un orizzonte chiaro: la bellezza come strumento quotidiano.

Joan Coderch e Javier Malavia si sono uniti nel 2015 per realizzare un'opera scultorea caratterizzata da una tecnica raffinata, presente dalla modellazione in studio fino al pezzo finale fuso in bronzo.

Joan Coderch è nato nel 1959 a Castellar del Vallés, Barcellona, e si è laureato alla Facoltà di Belle Arti di Barcellona nel 1984.

Javier Malavia è nato nel 1970 a Oñati, Guipúzcoa, e si è laureato alla Facoltà di Belle Arti di San Carlos di Valencia nel 1993.

Una volta incontrati, hanno scoperto le loro somiglianze artistiche, che li hanno portati ad intraprendere questo nuovo progetto che segue le orme di maestri della figurazione come Maillol, Rodin, Marini e Bourdelle.

Parte dell'originalità della loro arte risiede nel modo in cui lavorano, dal momento che realizzano le loro sculture a quattro mani, partecipando così alla creazione dei pezzi.

Joan e Javier hanno in comune anche i valori della loro creazione artistica, come l'impegno sociale per quanto riguarda l'uguaglianza, l'ambiente e l'infanzia.

Il loro progetto si distingue per la sua onestà e autenticità: esplorano diversi atteggiamenti umani nei confronti della vita, in cui l'imitazione della natura, la ricerca dell'emozione attraverso l'opera, la rivelazione dei sentimenti che guidano l'uomo, l'incontro tra la figura e la postura, e la combinazione di bellezza e disciplina ha un posto di rilievo.

L'essere umano è al centro della loro arte.

Fin dall'inizio, Coderch e Malavia sono riusciti a posizionarsi come eccezionali artisti figurativi.

Hanno ricevuto il Premio Reina Sofía per la Pittura e la Scultura per la loro opera d'arte "Amleto" nel 2017 e hanno vinto il Primo Premio al 14° Concorso Internazionale del Salone ARC con la scultura "La danza del cigno" nel 2019.

Tra gli altri loro riconoscimenti figurano la Medaglia per la scultura Mariano Benlliure, il TIAC Art Prize o Arcadia Contemporary Award.

Oltre ad essere rinomati a livello nazionale ed internazionale, il loro lavoro fa parte di collezioni private in diversi paesi d'Europa, Asia e America.

Espongono il loro lavoro in mostre collettive ed individuali sia in enti privati che in spazi pubblici.

Molte sedi in Francia, Stati Uniti (Miami), Messico, Italia o Grecia hanno avuto l'opportunità di ammirare le loro opere dove espongono regolarmente.

Erano presenti alla Biennale Urban Nation di Berlino con il loro pezzo "Learning to Fly" nel settembre 2019.

Nel 2018 hanno tenuto una mostra personale alla Galerie Mokum di Amsterdam.

In Spagna hanno esposto nelle città più importanti, come A Coruña, Barcellona, Granada, Ibiza, Madrid, Valencia o Malaga.
