Barbara Krafft | Portrait painter

Maria Barbara Krafft (1764-1825) was an Austrian painter, best remembered today for her widely reproduced posthumous portrait of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

She was born in Iglau (now Jihlava, in the Czech Republic) where her father, the Austrian Imperial court painter Johann Nepomuk Steiner, was working at the time.

She was taught painting by her father and accompanied him to Vienna, where she exhibited her first painting in 1786 at the Academy of Fine Arts.

In 1789 she married the Viennese pharmacist Josef Krafft.

Their son Johann August Krafft, born in 1792 and taught by his mother, later became a painter and lithographer.

For various periods between 1794 and 1803 Krafft worked and travelled alone in Jihlava, Salzburg, and Prague, achieving increasing success primarily as a portrait painter, but also producing genre and religious works.

By 1804 she was separated from her husband and settled in Salzburg where she lived until 1821.

In the last four years of her life, she was the appointed City Painter in Bamberg where she painted 145 paintings.

Barbara Krafft, nata Steiner (Iglau, 1º aprile 1764 - Bamberga, 28 settembre 1825), è stata una pittrice Austriaca, ricordata soprattutto per il ritratto postumo di Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Nata a Iglau (oggi Jihlava, nell'odierna Repubblica Ceca), Barbara era figlia di Johann Nepomuk Steiner, un pittore alla corte austriaca.

Insieme al padre (che fu anche suo maestro) viaggiò a Vienna dove pubblicò il suo primo lavoro nel 1786 all'Accademia di belle arti di Vienna.

Nel 1789 si sposò con Josef Krafft, un farmacista viennese, il loro figlio Johann August Krafft nato tre anni dopo fu anch'egli un pittore e litografo dopo aver studiato presso la madre.

Per vari periodi tra il 1794 e il 1803 Krafft lavorò e viaggiò da sola a Jihlava, Salisburgo e Praga, ottenendo un successo crescente principalmente come ritrattista, ma producendo anche opere di genere e religiose.

Nel 1804 si separò dal marito e si stabilì a Salisburgo, dove visse fino al 1821.

Negli ultimi quattro anni della sua vita, fu nominata pittrice cittadina a Bamberg, dove dipinse 145 dipinti.
