Mark Grantham, 1966 | Abstract painter

Mark Grantham was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he continues to reside.

He has been painting full-time since 1996.

He grew up on Leeds Street in the city's north end, and completed his first oil on canvas at age 11.

After receiving Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees from Dalhousie University, Grantham went on to study architecture at the Technical University of Nova Scotia, from where he holds a Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies degree as well as a Masters degree in Architecture.

Grantham has been painting full time since 1996, and for 20 years was represented by a commercial gallery in Halifax.

Grantham's annual solo exhibits became legendary for the excitement they created, with gallery patrons and collectors lining up for hours in order to secure the painting or paintings of their choice.

After 20 sell-out shows, Grantham now works as an independent artist, and continues to find new and exciting ways to present his work to a ever-growing audience.

Grantham's work can be found in countless private and corporate collections, as well as the Nova Scotia and Canada Council Art Banks.

Artist statement

"I love pushing the boundary between representational and abstract art.

Manipulating recognizable subject matter to a point where it almost becomes abstract is a process that is not only satisfying for me, but I believe engages the viewer in a way that a hyper-realistic painting doesn’t.

A loosely-handled, semi-abstract painting, one with areas that are vague and mysterious, takes advantage of the power of suggestion.

To me, suggestions are always more interesting than precise details.

Suggestions allow the viewer’s imagination to play a part in the painting, which connects viewer and painting in a much more powerful way".

Mark Grantham è nato nel ad Halifax, in Nuova Scozia, dove tuttora risiede.

Dipinge a tempo pieno dal 1996.

È cresciuto a Leeds Street, all'estremità nord della città, e ha completato il suo primo olio su tela all'età di 11 anni.

Dopo aver conseguito il Bachelor of Arts ed il Bachelor of Education presso la Dalhousie University, Grantham ha proseguito gli studi in architettura presso l'Università Tecnica della Nuova Scozia, dove ha conseguito un Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies ed un Master in Architettura.

Grantham dipinge a tempo pieno dal 1996 e per 20 anni è stato rappresentato da una galleria commerciale ad Halifax.

Mark Grantham: - "Manipolare un soggetto riconoscibile fino al punto in cui diventa quasi astratto è un processo che non solo è soddisfacente per me, ma credo che coinvolga lo spettatore in un modo che un dipinto iperrealistico non fa.

Un dipinto semi-astratto, con mani libere, con aree vaghe e misteriose, sfrutta il potere della suggestione.

Per me i suggerimenti sono sempre più interessanti dei dettagli precisi.

I suggerimenti consentono all'immaginazione dello spettatore di svolgere un ruolo nel dipinto, che collega lo spettatore e la pittura in un modo molto più potente.

Dipingo da molto tempo, oltre 40 anni".
