He was a member of the Munich artists' cooperative and exhibited his paintings in the Munich Glass Palace, among other places.
Although his residence was in Munich, he spent the summer months in Mittenwald for more than 50 years from 1879, where he created most of his work.

His circle of friends included fellow painters Wilhelm Leibl and Lovis Corinth. Lovis Corinth created two oil portraits of Prolß in 1900 and 1913.
Prolß was a member of the internationally renowned "Munich School".

The influence of Franz von Defregger can be seen in his painting style.

One of his most famous works was Grandfather and Granddaughter (1905).

His works were also printed in the Gazebo.
His father was the Dresden dramaturge and literary historian Robert Prölß (1821-1906).
