Theodor Josef Ethofer | Genre painter

Theodor Josef Ethofer (October 29, 1849 in Vienna - Leopoldstadt; † October 24, 1915 in Baden near Vienna) was an Austrian painter, known for Figure, genre and Austrian native costume painting.

Theodor Ethofer studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Carl Wurzinger.

He spent the period from 1872-1887 in Italy, visiting Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples, Sicily, Spain and Tunis, among other places. After a stay in Vienna, he settled in Salzburg in 1898, where he owned a studio in the Künstlerhaus.

Theodor Ethofer mainly painted genre paintings and cityscapes, and took part in many art salons.

His painting was influenced by the works of August von Pettenkofen. In Salzburg he created many pictures depicting local folk costumes.

Already on May 5, 1897, he had been awarded the Knight's Cross, First Class, of the Order of Merit of Philip the Magnanimous by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse.

Theodor Ethofer ha studiato pittura all'Academy of Fine Arts di Vienna con Carl Wurzinger.

Trascorse in Italia il periodo dal 1872-1887 dove visitò Venezia, Firenze, Roma, Napoli, così come la Sicilia, la Spagna e Tunisi.

Dopo un soggiorno a Vienna, si stabilì a Salisburgo nel 1898, dove possedeva uno studio nel Künstlerhaus.Theodor Ethofer dipinse principalmente dipinti di genere e vedute della città, partecipando a molti saloni d’arte.

La sua pittura è stata influenzata dalle opere di August von Pettenkofen. A Salisburgo ha creato molte immagini con le rappresentazioni dei costumi locali.

Ethofer ha realizzato diverse serie di costumi raffiguranti i cinque distretti di Salisburgo.

Morì a Baden, Vienna, il 24 ottobre 1915.
