Maggie Rudy | Mouseland | Children's book author and illustrator

Children's book author and illustrator Maggie Rudy spent part of her childhood living in England, where she visited Beatrix Potter’s farm on a formative third-grade field trip.

She has since been making mice and their worlds out of felt and scavenged materials for more than twenty years. Maggie lives in Portland, Oregon.

- "I had a couple of felt mice, bought in an English toy shop when I was a child. About 25 years ago, with young children of my own, I took a pattern from those old survivors and began to make my own versions. Then the mice needed somewhere to live, and the whole thing got out of hand.

I began photographing Mouseland for children's books in 2013. I'd previously worked as an artist, showing paintings and sculptures in a gallery. Building Mouseland is much more engrossing, because I constantly need to problem-solve materials and fabrication methods".

"My work day may involve painting, soldering, book design, sculpting,drawing, photo-editing, sewing, photography, pattern drafting, dyeing, or wood working.

I have a home studio overflowing with tools and materials - bits of wood, paper and fabric scraps, faux flora, jewelry findings, and miscellaneous salvage.

There are finished creatures and props in plexiglas boxes, and sets stacked up on the floor".

"I live in a house in the woods in Portland, Oregon, with my husband and dog, and I have two grown sons, who are also artists".

"I prefer to use found and recycled materials when I can, and avoid craft stores.

My studio is full of miscellaneous stuff and I tend to walk with my nose to the ground, hunting for interesting litter and natural objects.

I am very fortunate that Portland has a SCRAP outlet, which sells all sorts of donated salvage".

L'autrice ed illustratrice di libri per bambini, Maggie Rudy ha trascorso parte della sua infanzia vivendo in Inghilterra, dove ha visitato la fattoria di Beatrix Potter durante una gita formativa di terza elementare.

Da più di vent'anni realizza topi e i loro mondi con feltro e materiali di recupero. Maggie vive a Portland, nell'Oregon.

- "Avevo un paio di topolini in feltro, acquistati in un negozio di giocattoli inglese quando ero bambina. Circa 25 anni fa, con i miei figli piccoli, ho preso uno schema da quei vecchi sopravvissuti e ho iniziato a creare le mie versioni".

"Poi i topi hanno avuto bisogno di un posto dove vivere e l'intera faccenda è sfuggita di mano. Ho iniziato a fotografare Mouseland per libri per bambini nel 2013. In precedenza avevo lavorato come artista, esponendo dipinti e sculture in una galleria.

Costruire Mouseland è molto più avvincente, perché ho costantemente bisogno di risolvere problemi con materiali e metodi di fabbricazione.

La mia giornata lavorativa può comprendere pittura, saldatura, design di libri, scultura, disegno, fotoritocco, cucito, fotografia, disegno di modelli, tintura o lavorazione del legno".

"Ho uno studio casalingo traboccante di strumenti e materiali: pezzi di legno, scarti di carta e tessuto, flora finta, reperti di gioielli e vari oggetti di recupero. Ci sono creature finite e oggetti di scena in scatole di plexiglas e set accatastati sul pavimento.

Vivo in una casa nei boschi a Portland, in Oregon, con mio marito ed il mio cane, e ho due figli grandi, anche loro artisti".

"Quando posso, preferisco utilizzare materiali trovati e riciclati ed evitare i negozi di artigianato.

Il mio studio è pieno di cose varie e tendo a camminare con il naso a terra, alla ricerca di rifiuti interessanti ed oggetti naturali.

Sono molto fortunato che Portland abbia un punto vendita SCRAP, che vende tutti i tipi di recuperi donati".
