Arnaldo Ferraguti | Genre / Vertist painter

Arnaldo Ferraguti (1862-1925) was an Italian painter and illustrator, often painting genre subjects.

He was born in Ferrara but trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti of Naples, then under the leadership of Domenico Morelli. He befriended the painter Francesco Paolo Michetti and his circle at Francavilla al Mare.

In 1891, he married Olga Treves, granddaughter of the editors Emilio and Giuseppe Treves. He erected a villa in Pallanza where he taught painting, and attended salons in the nearby Villa Cordelia of Giuseppe Treves. He died in Forlì in 1925.

In 1887, he exhibited a series of pastel studies in Venice.

Starting in 1890, he submitted his masterwork: a massive (nearly 6 by 3 meter) canvas Alla vanga to various exhibitions, to praise and awards. The canvas depicts a line of barefoot peasants, from children to elders, breaking the soil with spades, nearby the supervisor is talks to peasant working women.

The scene trumpets a clear affection for the hard-laboring proletarian farmers.

It can be contrasted to the less romanticized The Fourth Estate painting (1901) by Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo🎨, which portrays workers with no pastoral mbellishment.

Arnaldo Ferraguti (Ferrara, 17 aprile 1862 - Forlì, 4 dicembre 1925) è stato un pittore Italiano🎨 Verista, celebre in vita anche per le numerose incisioni con le quali illustrò i libri dell'editore Treves.

Studiò all'Accademia di Belle Arti a Napoli, ma si formò pittoricamente anche grazie alla frequentazione del pittore verista Francesco Paolo Michetti, dal quale apprese anche l'utilizzo della fotografia come strumento per la "cattura" delle immagini.

Divenne celebre nel 1891 con l'enorme dipinto Alla vanga, oggi conservato al Museo del Paesaggio di Verbania-Pallanza, nella quale ritrasse un gruppo di braccianti intenti al lavoro sotto lo sguardo del sorvegliante.

Nel 1897 e 1899 partecipò alla II° e III° Esposizione internazionale d'arte di Venezia.

Attraverso Michetti fu presentato agli editori fratelli Treves, coi quali iniziò a collaborare, finendo per sposare Olga Treves, nipote di Emilio Treves e Giuseppe Treves.

Da questo momento, accanto all'attività di pittore, Ferraguti ebbe una notevole produzione come incisore, illustrando le edizioni Treves delle opere di De Amicis, Verga ed altri, oltre a creare centinaia di tavole per l'Illustrazione Italiana.
