Born near Nolde, a village in North Schleswig. Changed his name from Hansen to Nolde in 1902. Worked as wood carver in several furniture factories, studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Karlsruhe 1888-9 and began to sketch landscapes and portraits in his spare time.
Taught drawing at the Museum of Industrial Arts in St Gall, Switzerland, 1892-7. First oil paintings 1896.
Decided to devote himself to painting and studied at Friedrich Fehr's private school in Munich 1898-9 and with Adolf Holzel in Dachau 1899; also spent part of 1899-1900 in Paris, where he attended the Académie Julian.
In the following years, lived mainly in Berlin and on the island of Alsen.

Elin Danielson-Gambogi | Naturalist painter

Elin Kleopatra Danielson-Gambogi (3 September 1861 - 31 December 1919) was a Finnish painter, best known for her realist works and portraits. Danielson-Gambogi was part of the first generation of Finnish women artists who received professional education in art, the so-called "Painter sisters' generation".
The group also included Helene Schjerfbeck.

Early life and studies

Elin Danielson was born in the small village of Noormarkku, near the city of Pori in Western Finland to Karl Danielson and Rosa Amalia Danielson.
Her early years were however spent at Ilmajoki as her father attempted farming there. Because of the Finnish famine of 1866–68, the farm failed. After being forced to sell the farm, her father Karl shot himself.
Her mother Rosa returned to Noormarkku with her two daughters.

Born to an British family in Dublin on 28 October 1909, Francis Bacon (1909-1992) was the second of five children of Christina Firth, a steel heiress, and Edward Bacon, a race-horse trainer and former army officer. His childhood, spent at Cannycourt, County Kildare, was blighted by asthma from which he suffered throughout his life.
With the outbreak of war in 1914, his father took the family to London and joined the Ministry of War; they divided the post-war years between London and Ireland. Bacon repeatedly ran away from his school in Cheltenham (1924-6).
After his authoritarian father, repelled by his burgeoning homosexuality, threw him out of the family home for wearing his mother’s clothes, Bacon arrived in London in 1926 with little schooling but with a weekly allowance of £3 from his mother.

Henri Julien Félix Rousseau (21 May 1844 – 2 September 1910) was a French post-impressionist painter in the Naïve or Primitive manner.
He was also known as Le Douanier (the customs officer), a humorous description of his occupation as a toll and tax collector.
He started painting seriously in his early forties; by age 49, he retired from his job to work on his art full-time.

Andrea del Verrocchio | Sculpture works


Andrea del Verrocchio (1435-1488) was 15th-century Florentine sculptor and painter and the teacher of Leonardo da Vinci. His equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni, erected in Venice in 1496, is particularly important.
The sculptural works either recorded to be by Verrocchio or actually extant are few in number.
According to his brother Tommaso, Verrocchio was responsible for an inlaid slab (1467) in the Florentine church of San Lorenzo recording the burial place of Cosimo de’ Medici, who died in 1464.

Édouard Alexandre Sain (13 May 1830 - 26 June 1910) was a French painter whose works included historical and genre subjects as well as portraits.
Sain was strongly interested in antiquity.

Andrea del Verrocchio (born 1435, Florence - died 1488, Venice), 15th-century Florentine sculptor and painter and the teacher of Leonardo da Vinci.
His equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni, erected in Venice in 1496, is particularly important.
The only surviving painting that according to documentary proof should be by Verrocchio, an altarpiece of the Madonna and Child with Saints in the Donato de’ Medici Chapel of the cathedral at Pistoia, was not completed by the master himself.

Nicola Simbari (1927-2012)

Italian painter Nicola Simbari was born in San Lucido, Calabria and this beautiful area greatly impacted his Mediterranean paintings: the blues of the ocean and sky and the bright hues of the flowers.
His family moved to Rome when he was young and his father worked there as a Vatican architect.
Rome's art masterpieces so impressed Simbari that, by age 13, he decided to study art and enrolled at the Accademia delle Belle Arti. He opened his first studio in Rome at 22 years of age. Simbari's early works featured scenes from his childhood - gypsies, cafes, fishing villages and the Italian countryside.

Despite its size, Belgium has a long and distinguished artistic tradition that goes back to the Middle Ages, considerably pre-dating the foundation of the current state in 1830.
Art from the areas making up modern Belgium is called in English Netherlandish up to the separation with the Netherlands from 1570 on, and Flemish until the 18th century.
Important monasteries in Belgium were centres of production in Carolingian art and Ottonian art, and later the area producing Romanesque Mosan art is now largely in Belgium.

A veduta (Italian for "view"; plural vedute) is a highly detailed, usually large-scale painting or, more often, print of a cityscape or some other vista. The painters of vedute are referred to as vedutisti.
This genre of landscape originated in Flanders, where artists such as Paul Bril painted vedute as early as the 16th century.
In the 17th century, Dutch painters made a specialty of detailed and accurate recognizable city and landscapes that appealed to the sense of local pride of the wealthy Dutch middle class.
An archetypal example is Johannes Vermeer's View of Delft.

Herbert Gustave Schmalz who named himself Herbert Gustave Carmichael in 1918, was an English painter. He is counted among the Pre-Raphaelites.

Schmalz was born in England as the son of a German father and an English mother. He received conventional education in painting, first at the South Kensington Art School and later at the Royal Academy of Arts, where he studied with Frank Dicksee, Stanhope Forbes and Arthur Hacker. He perfected his studies in Antwerp at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

After his return to London he made a name for himself as a history painter, with a style influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and orientalism. In 1884 he successfully exhibited his painting Too Late at the Royal Academy.

Giovanni Paolo Bedini (1844-1924) | Genre painter


Giovanni Bedini, also known as Paolo Bedini was an Italian painter who was born in Bologna, Italy.
The artist was trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, initially started up in painting with a historical theme, and soon abandoned it to devote himself to the representation of everyday life more carefree.


That of Bedini was a cheerful and lively art, much appreciated by critics and far from any romantic rhetoric, which matured its peculiarities in the vein of neo-rococo and middle-bourgeois style.
A tireless worker, Bedini created many works including oil paintings and watercolors that found a wide market both in Italy and abroad.

Giovanni Bedini, detto anche Paolo Bedini, formatosi all'Accademia di belle arti di Bologna si aggiudicò giovanissimo molti premi tra cui quello in Architettura (1863), in Decorazione e Figura (1864), in Prospettiva (1865), in Pittura (1866) e nella Figura delle statue ed Anatomia (1867).
La sua prima mostra avvenne nel 1867 quando portò un'opera ispirata alla storia rinascimentale nell'Esposizione Triennale di Reggio Emilia.
In seguito espose a Torino (1872), Genova (1876), Firenze (1877) e a Milano (1876, 1893, 1895, 1906).
Nel 1894 fu chiamato ad insegnare elementi di figura presso l'Accademia bolognese e, tra il 1907-1922, fu docente e Capo di Istituto presso la Scuola Professionale per le Arti Decorative di Bologna (in seguito denominata Istituto d'Arte e oggi accorpata in un unico istituto col nome di: Liceo Artistico "Francesco Arcangeli").
