"Chi non ha visto Venezia in aprile, non può immaginare tutta la bellezza inesprimibile di questa città d'incanto. La dolcezza della morbida primavera si addice a Venezia, come il sole abbacinante d'estate si addice alla splendida Genova, e l'oro e la porpora dell'autunno a Roma, grande e antica.

La bellezza di Venezia commuove e fa nascere desideri, come la primavera; stanca e lusinga come la promessa di una vicina, misteriosa felicità.

Tutto è luminoso e comprensibile, e tutto è avvolto nel fumo sonnolento di un silenzio incantato. Tutto tace ed è tutto gradevole; tutto è femminile, dallo stesso nome: non per niente l'hanno chiamata «la Bella».

Le sagome dei palazzi e delle chiese si alzano lievi e stupende, come il sogno di un giovane Iddio; c'è qualcosa di fiabesco, qualcosa di strano, che affascina, nel luccicare verdastro e nelle sfumature di seta dell'acqua tranquilla dei canali, nella silenziosa corsa delle gondole, nella mancanza di quell'irritante frastuono della città, di suoni e rumori.

«Venezia muore, si è spopolata» dicono i suoi abitanti; le mancava forse quest'ultima grazia, la grazia di appassire in fiore, nel trionfo della bellezza".
