Henri Fantin-Latour interprets Schumann, Wagner, Brahms and Berlioz

In the 1870s, Henri Fantin-Latour's (French painter and lithographer, 1836-1904) work shifted towards more literary themes that connected him with Symbolism.
In parallel with this development, his works reflected his discovery of the German contemporary music of Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner and Hector Berlioz which also provided him with a source of inspiration.

Nel 1870, verso la fine della sua vita, il lavoro del pittore e litografo Francese Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) si spostò verso temi più letterari che lo collegavano al Simbolismo. Dal 1890 espone al Salon solo opere di immaginazione, vicine al Simbolismo.
Parallelamente a questo sviluppo, le sue opere riflettono la sua scoperta della musica contemporanea tedesca, che gli ha anche fornito una fonte di ispirazione.

Questo grande amante della musica si dedicò essenzialmente a soggetti d'immaginazione, ispirati a temi musicali di Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Richard Wagner e Hector Berlioz con uno stile molto libero fatto di ritmi e di armonie; questo suo tentativo di trasferire i sentimenti musicali su tela gli attirò l'attenzione di alcune correnti francesi d'avanguardia: la sua pittura fu importante soprattutto per la direzione stilistica che avrebbe preso il nascente movimento del Simbolismo.
