Antonio Balestra (1666-1740) | Baroque painter

Antonio Balestra was a painter and engraver from a merchant family in Verona, Italy.

He was an enthusiastic amateur painter, but at the age of 17, following the sudden death of his father, he had to interrupt his studies to take care of the family business with his brothers.

Subsequently, he decided to dedicate himself to painting and moved to Venice for three years.

He moved to Rome around 1690 where, in 1694, he won first prize🎨 at the Accademia di S. Luca (the association of painters).

He returned to Venice and finally moved back to Verona in 1719.

Highly regarded by his contemporaries, in 1725 he was unanimously nominated a member of the Accademia di S. Luca. | © The Royal Collection Trust

Antonio Balestra fu pittore ed incisore di una famiglia di mercanti a Verona, in Italia.

Era un entusiasta pittore dilettante, ma all'età di 17 anni, in seguito all'improvvisa morte di suo padre, dovette interrompere gli studi per occuparsi dell'azienda di famiglia con i suoi fratelli.

Successivamente, decide di dedicarsi alla pittura e si trasferisce a Venezia per tre anni.

Si trasferì a Roma intorno al 1690 dove, nel 1694, vinse il primo premio🎨 all'Accademia di S. Luca (l'associazione dei pittori).

Ritornò a Venezia ed infine tornò a Verona nel 1719.

Molto apprezzato dai suoi contemporanei, nel 1725 fu nominato all'unanimità membro dell'Accademia di S. Luca. | © The Royal Collection Trust
