Sir Alfred Munnings | Romantic Equestrian painter

Sir Alfred James Munnings, KCVO, PRA (8 October 1878 - 17 July 1959) was known as one of England's finest painters of horses, and as an outspoken critic of Modernism.
Engaged by Lord Beaverbrook's Canadian War Memorials Fund, he earned several prestigious commissions after the Great War that made him wealthy.
Munnings was elected president of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1944.



He was made a Knight Bachelor in July of the same year, and was appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in the 1947 New Year Honours.
His presidency is best known for the valedictory speech he gave in 1949, in which he attacked modernism.
The broadcast was heard by millions of listeners to BBC radio.
An evidently inebriated Munnings claimed that the work of Cézanne, Matisse, and Picasso had corrupted art.

He recalled that Winston Churchill had once said to him, "Alfred, if you met Picasso coming down the street would you join with me in kicking his ... something something?" to which Munnings said he replied, "Yes Sir, I would". | © Wikipedia

Coinvolto dal Canadian War Memorials Fund di Lord Beaverbrook, dopo la Grande Guerra ottenne numerose commissioni prestigiose che lo resero ricco.
Munnings è stato eletto presidente della Royal Academy of Arts nel 1944.
E' stato fatto un Knight Bachelor nel mese di luglio dello stesso anno, ed è stato nominato un Cavaliere Comandante del Royal Victorian Order nel 1947 New Year Honours.
La sua presidenza è nota soprattutto per il discorso di valore pronunciato nel 1949, in cui attaccò il modernismo.
La trasmissione è stata ascoltata da milioni di ascoltatori della radio della BBC.
Un Munnings evidentemente inebriato affermò che l'opera di Cézanne, Matisse e Picasso aveva corrotto l'arte.
