Mario Henrique, 1983 | Abstract portraitist

Mario Henrique is an artist based in Cascais, Portugal.

Graduated in Design from Lisbon’s University of Fine Arts, he started his career in online marketing and web development agencies.

Later on, as a creative director, he recruited and led teams in Portugal, Spain and Brazil.

As partner and head of design in one of these projects, he would eventually be part of a successful exit via acquisition, and then shifted his focus to contemporary painting, which had always been a parallel interest.

A prolific portraitist, Mario is fascinated by the unpredictability of the human behaviour: the brief glances, the impermanence of facial expressions, the sudden movements.

This dynamic is also present in his Ballerinas Series, which lean toward the abstract expressionism.

Making use of uncommon and “rough” materials, like cardboards, reversed canvases and hardware tools, he paints abruptly and spontaneously.

His approach relies on drippings, splashes and paint throws, so that the physicality of the painting process is transparent in the final piece.

Listed in various private collections across Europe, America and Asia, he has exhibited in galleries both locally and abroad, and was awarded an Honorable Mention for his participation in the Brasília Biennial of Contemporary Arts 2016.

He was also featured in Saatchi Art’s Inside The Studio and is currently represented by the prestigious Bill Lowe Gallery in Atlanta, GA (USA).

Mario owns a studio/gallery at the Marina, in Cascais (Portugal), where some of his paintings are publicly exhibited.

Ritrattista prolifico, Mario è affascinato dall'imprevedibilità del comportamento umano: gli sguardi brevi, l'impermanenza delle espressioni facciali, i movimenti improvvisi.

Laureato in Design all'Università di Belle Arti di Lisbona, ha iniziato la sua carriera in agenzie di marketing online e sviluppo web.

In qualità di direttore creativo, ha reclutato e guidato team in Portogallo, Spagna e Brasile.

Un decennio dopo, avrebbe spostato la sua attenzione sulla pittura contemporanea, che era sempre stata un interesse parallelo.

Facendo uso di materiali non comuni e "grezzi", come cartoni, tele rovesciate e strumenti hardware, dipinge in modo brusco e spontaneo.

Il suo approccio si basa su gocciolamenti, schizzi e tiri di vernice, in modo che la fisicità del processo di pittura sia trasparente nel pezzo finale.

Elencato in varie collezioni private in Europa, America e Asia, ha esposto in gallerie sia a livello locale che all'estero ed è stato insignito di una Menzione d'Onore per la sua partecipazione alla Biennale di Arti Contemporanee di Brasilia 2016.

È stato anche protagonista di Inside The Studio di Saatchi Art ed è attualmente rappresentato dalla Bill Lowe Gallery, ArtCatto e Tilsitt Gallery, tra le altre prestigiose gallerie.

Mario possiede uno studio/galleria alla Marina, a Cascais (Portogallo), dove sono esposti pubblicamente alcuni suoi dipinti.
