Thomas Edwin Mostyn | Edwardian Genre / Romantic painter

British painter🎨 Thomas Edwin Mostyn R.O.I., R.W.A., R.C.A., (1864-1930) was born in Liverpool. Raised in Manchester, he studied at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts.

He had his first local exhibition in 1880, and was showing at the Royal Academy (R.A.) by the age of 29.

Tom Mostyn's work was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1891 as well as being shown extensively abroad.

Mostyn lived in London and later in Torquay, where he died on 22nd August 1930.

Mostyn is generally known for his scenes depiciting a bold romantisicm based on victorian garden scenes and was strongly influenced by his mentor Sir Hubert Von Herkomer.

Mostyn's paintings are inspirational, his right to be recognised worldwide as a top class artist is purely a matter of time.

Studiò presso l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Manchester, dove divenne membro nel 1891 e dove vinse un premio per un disegno.
Le sue prime opere presentarono inizialmente scene religiose, ritratti, soggetti della middle-class e solo nei primi anni del XX secolo la sua arte si formalizzò nei paesaggi ed in particolare negli eclettici e romantici giardini vittoriani.
Mostyn divenne un paesaggista molto apprezzato e nel 1904 si trasferì a Londra.
Ebbe incarichi e onorificenze (partecipò al Salon di Parigi) e nel 1914 il suo "Garden of Enchantment" fu utilizzato come palcoscenico per un'opera teatrale e teatrali erano i suoi dipinti con case circondate da verdi lussureggianti e fiori colorati.
Andando contro il "materialismo vittoriano" esaltato dall'industrializzazione e dal progresso, Mostyn abbandonò il realismo, per dipingere paesaggi incantati, lontani dalla quotidianità urbana.
