Derek Jones is a coal miner's son, born in County Durham, and he is currently based in Berwickshire. He went to Art College at Hartlepool and followed this by completing a degree in Fine Art at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Following a year working in a museum, Derek began to teach art. He later helped to run a gallery in Berwick upon Tweed. For the last twenty years, Derek has been concentrating on his own work, which consists mainly of figurative drawing.
Painting is the most personal art form to Derek: 'I don't see drawing as a preparation or study for painting but as the most direct and intimate of art forms. In a drawing you can see the artist think and respond and feel the trace of his hand'.
Derek works with pastel, charcoal, watercolor, gouache, acrylic and intaglio printmaking, painting directly from models. Also, he produces screen prints and etchings.
Widely exhibited, Derek’s work has been shown in London, Amsterdam, Glasgow and Edinburgh. I am a figure painter and printmaker. Most of the work shown here is done with the help of local amateur models. My main mediums are pastel, charcoal, acrylic, watercolor and intaglio printmaking. Am always willing to discuss commissions.
