Théodore Gérard | Genre painter

Belgian painter Théodore Gérard (1829-1895) was an engraver and painter of genre scenes and drew much of his inspiration from the Low Countries.
Gérard studied at the Ghent Academy before moving to Brussels in 1863. Throughout his life he traveled around Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire exhibiting internationally.

As a result Gérard established a strong reputation as a genre painter, receiving medals** in Philadelphia (1870), London (1871), Vienna (1873) and Brussels (1875). He was also made professor at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts.
Gérard's work is represented in the Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Ghent, the Coutrai Museum and the Koninlijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp.

Successivamente, ha trascorso gran parte della sua vita viaggiando attraverso la Germania e l'Austria e Ungheria, dipingendo la vita nella campagna e nei villaggi, affascinato dalla serenità dei soggetti.

Nel 1863 si è stabilito a Bruxelles dove ha insegnato pittura presso l'Accademia di Belle Arti.

Theodore Gerard ha partecipato a concorsi artistici anche fuori dal Belgio, vincendo medaglie** alla fiera di Philadelphia nel 1870, a Londra nel 1871, a Vienna nel 1873 ed a Bruxelles nel 1875.

Il pittore muore nel 1895 e alcune sue opere sono esposte nel Museo di Bruxelles, nel Museo di Gand, nel Museo Courtrai e nel Museo di Antwerp.
