Koh Sang Woo, 1978 | Color Negatives photography

Koh Sang Woo was born in Seoul and currently lives in New York. He has had numerous important international exhibitions recently, including “Media Media” at the Queens Museum New York, Pulse Miami, “Distinctively Korea” at Christie's in London, the Sungkok museum in Seoul, and as an invited artist at the 798 Beijing Biennial in China.

Along with solid auction results in both Hong Kong and New York, Koh also exhibited most recently in the important “Korean Art Show” in New York, timed to coincide with the Armory Show in 2010 and to raise the profile of contemporary Korean art. True Stories will be his first solo exhibition in the UK.

Koh Sang Woo creates vivid images of human figures with an approach that adopts painting, performance, documentation and traditional photographic techniques.

The artist’s work is characterized by the development of a blue tone photograph that captures his subjects using negative film.
The prints are the product of a labor intensive dialogue with his sitters who see the artist adorn their bodies with props such as butterflies and flowers.

Most importantly, Sang Woo applies water-based paint with gentle brushstrokes across their body and hair.
