Antonio Sgarbossa was born in Fontana Viva, Italy

He started his artistic career at the age of twelve, attending an artistic ceramics workshop in Bassano.

In 1971 he moved to Nouchatel, in Switzerland, where he lived for a few years. It was here with a group of European artists that he gave life to an art studio, named the "La Soffitta" (Attic) and was first recognized for his work.

He returned to Italy in 1976 and opened his own ceramic art studio. In 1978 he had his first important art exhibition at the Galleria del Fiore, with personal and collective paintings from various towns in Italy and Switzerland. What is a master piece? Mallarme dared to define it: It is the other face of the moon.

Antonio Sgarbossa understood him. In art we look for something that is beyond our normal vision, as almost a reflection of ourselves.

It is the rather mysterious side that appears, with all the emotions and the thrills of the soul. Here is Sgarbossa's painting that invites us to look beyond. What does it represent? It is quite clear that Sgarbossa comes from a long pictorial mastership training.

Recently he has painted his pictures with extra fine layers with inserts of ancient appearances; canovian characters; echoes of Caravaggio and renaissance architectures. Inside of that time, clues of daily life with today's appearance.

He has shown the authentic quality of a painter. Now, he has deepened his expressive world, he has become modern but still remains antique, he has dug even deeper and built. We see even more clearly as we get into the moving mechanism of the painting, allowing our feelings to lead us until the painting becomes ours, reflecting our culture, our sensitivity and our way to interpret today.

Here is the modernity of this painter. He not only portrays the nomadic and curious culture of today but also that of a deep knowledge of chromatic rendition going back to an ancient past. It is worth observing his work deeply, to taste its suggestive magic from which eminates.. who knows?

In Fact, it is the light which pivots his pluriannual stylistic quest.

A deep and bright source of light is generally placed at the center of the painting, surrounding what the artist wants to emphasise. Objects, streets, furniture and parts of the picture are made to stand out, captured by a more or less intensifying light.

At times it so suffused as to emanate hidden sentiments, and at other times violent, but as warm as the summer sun. Then again at other times as seen in the night landscapes, it can have mysterious connotations which can be almost disquieting.

Antonio Sgarbossa inizia la sua attivitа artistica all'etа di dodici anni frequentando un laboratorio di ceramica d'arte in Bassano.

Nel 1971 si trasferisce per alcuni anni a Nouchatel in Svizzera, con un gruppo di artisti europei forma uno studio d'arte denominato "La Soffitta".

Qui ottiene i suoi primi riconoscimenti. Rientrato in Italia nel 1976, apre uno studio di ceramiche d'arte.

Nel 1978 la sua prima importante personale di pittura alla Galleria Il Fiore.

Che cos'è un'opera d'arte?

Mallarmé ha azzardato una definizione: "è l'altra faccia della luna".

Antonio Sgarbossa lo ha capito.

Noi cerchiamo nell'arte qualcosa che sia al di lа della visione fenomenica, quasi un rispecchiamento di noi stessi. E' appunto il lato misterioso che appare, con tutti i turbamenti e i trasalimenti dell'anima.

Ecco un dipinto di Sgarbossa che ci invita a vedere oltre. Cosa rappresenta?;

Tocca a noi immaginarlo sullo spunto datoci dal pittore. Un interno, nello sfondo un nero ma luminoso paesaggio notturno che trascolora.
Certo è che ci troviamo di fronte a un organismo: cioè a qualcosa che vive una sua vita coerente.

Sgarbossa è partito dall'idea neodadista del decoupage, cioè dagli strati di manifesti, di vecchie foto, ma l'ha riportata in chiave tutta pittorica, dentro un mondo che, via via che il nostro occhio lo scopre, diventa favoloso, carico di suggestioni, dolcissimo nell'armonia cromatica, estroso nei tagli d’immagini, sempre in movimento, pronto a catturarci fino in fondo e farci sognare.

Sgarbossa (e ben lo si capisce) viene da un lungo magistero pittorico. Ha dipinto recentemente quadri dalle stesure finissime con inserti di parvenze antiche: figure canoviane, echi caravaggeschi, architetture rinascimentali. Interni del tempo, scorci del quotidiano vivere con le presenze d'oggi.

Ha dimostrato cioè, qualitа autentiche di pittore. Ora ha approfondito il suo mondo espressivo: s'è fatto moderno pur restando antico, ha scavato al di dentro, ha costruito. Noi vediamo ma anche stravediamo, nel senso che entriamo dentro il meccanismo mobile del quadro lasciandoci trasportare dalle nostre sensazioni: finché il quadro diventa "nostro", specchio della nostra cultura, della nostra sensibilitа, del nostro modo di interpretare oggi.

Sta qui l'attualitа di questo pittore. Egli è dentro la cultura nomade e curiosa del nostro tempo, ma anche dentro una sapienza di resa cromatica e materica che risale ad un grande passato. Vale osservarle a fondo le sue opere: gustarne la suggestiva magia che da esse promana… chissа: potrebbe essere proprio l'altra faccia della luna che noi da sempre agogniamo di vedere.
