Henri Lebasque | Post-Impressionist painter

Henri Lebasque (25 September 1865 - 7 August 1937) was a French post-impressionist painter.

He was born at Champigné (Maine-et-Loire).

His work is represented in French museums, notably Angers, Geneva (Petit Palais), Lille (Musée des Beaux-Arts), Nantes and Paris (Musée d’Orsay). Lebasque died at Cannet, Alpes Maritimes in 1937.

Education and artistic development

He started his education at the École régionale des beaux-arts d'Angers, and moved to Paris in 1886.

There, Lebasque started studying under Léon Bonnat, and assisted Ferdinand Humbert with the decorative murals at the Panthéon.

Around this time, Lebasque met Camille Pissarro and Auguste Renoir*, who later would have a large impact on his work.

Lebasque's vision was coloured by his contact with younger painters, especially Édouard Vuillard* and Pierre Bonnard, founders of the Nabis' Group, who were the Intimists that first favoured the calm and quietude of domestic subject matter.

Career

Lebasque was a founding member of the Salon d'Automne in 1903 with his friend Henri Matisse and exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants.

Two years later, a group of artists exhibited there including Georges Rouault, André Derain, Henri Ottmann, Édouard Vuillard and Matisse.

From his first acquaintance with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, Lebasque learnt the significance of a colour theory which stressed the use of complementary colours in shading.

Lebasque also became friends with artists such as Gustave Rouault, Raoul Dufy, Louis Valtat, and Henri Manguin, the last of whom introduced Lebasque to the South of France.

His time in South of France would lead to a radical transformation in Lebasque’s paintings, changing his colour palette forever. Other travels included the Vendée, Normandy and Brittany.

Lebasque had some commercial success during his lifetime.

Joseph Henri Baptiste Lebasque (Champigné, 25 settembre 1865 - Le Cannet, 7 agosto 1937) è stato un pittore Francese, di scuola post-impressionista.

Nacque in una famiglia modesta (il padre era bottaio) e si iscrisse nel 1886 all'Académie Colarossi.

In seguito collaborò con Ferdinand Humbert agli affreschi del Panthéon per sei anni, a partire dal 1888.

Iniziò poi ad esporre i suoi lavori presso la Società degli Artisti Francesi e al Salon degli Indipendenti lavorando assieme a Maximilien Luce ed a Paul Signac.

Espose anche alla Società nazionale di Belle arti, dove, nel 1902, conobbe Pissarro, artista che esercitò subito una grande influenza sulle sue concezioni pittoriche.

Nei suoi viaggi, inoltre, si recò a Londra dove scoprì la pittura di Turner.

Questi apporti culturali consolidarono la sua formazione e gli aprirono nuove vie espressive che Lebasque esperì sempre con grande maestria.

Nel 1903 lo Stato acquistò il suo quadro "Merenda sull'erba".

Collaborò quindi con Félix Vallotton e Georges Rouault a delle prove di decorazione su ceramica presso André Methey nel 1906 e realizzò decorazioni e arredi per teatri e per diversi ambienti parigini.

Terminata la guerra, alla quale partecipò, nel 1922 espose alla galleria E. Druet. Due anni dopo comprò la villa "Beau Site", dove abitò sino al 1930.

Nel 1925 fu promosso ufficiale della Legion d'Onore e dal 1927 non accettò più di firmare contratti con i mercanti d'arte.

Nel 1930 lasciò Parigi per il Sud della Francia ed acquistò una casa sulla Costa Azzurra a Le Cannet, in Rue Danys.

Lì incontrò e frequentò assiduamente Dunoyer de Segonsec, noto illustratore, ed il pittore Pierre Bonnard, che si erano stabiliti anche loro a Le Cannet già nel 1925.

E a Le Cannet Henri Lebasque morì e fu sepolto nel 1937, all'età di 72 anni. | © Wikipedia
